I didn?t really want to write about the alleged domestic dispute incident involving R&B star Chris Brown and Rihanna, but the French press sure is giving it a lot of coverage.
Today Brown released a statement through his spokesman (which will no doubt produce even more articles):
"Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired. I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God's help, to emerging a better person."He added, "Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong. While I would like to be able to talk about this more, until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say except that I have not written any messages or made any posts to Facebook, on blogs or any place else. Those posts or writings under my name are frauds."
Police are investigating the incident. But does this statement mean that the 19 year old did it? That he attacked her? We?ll have to see how it plays out.
Articles have been in our daily French papers for a week now, and they don?t write about American celebrities lightly. They don?t give this much attention to just any one. Besides the papers, I?ve heard about this story on French TV, and the French internet is buzzing. The French (or a lot of them at least) ?know? Rihanna. She was the ?godmother? or celebrity sponsor of the popular Star Academy this past season (Star Ac 8). They love her. Ask any thirteen-year-old French kid to sing lyrics, and they can belt out ?Umbrella? with their cute little French accents in a heartbeat. This morning I even heard a lady singing to her ipod (and unfortunately us too) on the metro. I have to say she did a pretty decent job on the English. At least I figured out which song she was singing.
And I'll never give myself to another
The way I gave it to you
Don't even recognize
The ways you hurt me
Do you?
It's gonna take a miracle to bring me back
And you're the one to blame
[Chorus:]
And now I feel like, oh
You're the reason
Why I'm thinking
I don't wanna smoke on
These cigarettes no more
I guess that's what I get
For wishful thinking
I should've never let you enter my door
Next time you wanna go on and leave
I should just let you go on and do it
Cause now I'm using like I bleed
It's like I checked into rehab and
Baby, you're my disease
It's like I checked into rehab and
Baby, you're my disease
I gotta check into rehab
'Cause baby you're my disease
I gotta check into rehab
'Cause baby you're my disease?
Telling.
Or maybe not.
When Rihanna emerges, we have a pretty good chance of seeing her on a French talk show to discuss what happened. In the least, she'll be interviewed by French magazines. This story is long from over.
To be continued.
