Do you remember where you were when you got the call? Or perhaps you were already watching it en direct on TV? I was on my way to my French class when I got the call. "You're probably mistaken, no?" I asked. Unfortunately, it was I who was mistaken.
I'd only been living in Paris for a couple of years when it happened. I still had attachments in the place I thought I'd never leave. My best friends still lived there and even worked at Wall Street. I'll never forget hitting the redial over and over again until finally getting through to one of them. She was running, trying to get away from the dust and the crowd. She was crying. We were both terrfied. I went to work the next day in the Grande Arche at La Defense and felt like a fool for going in. It was all we talked about and thought about and dreamt about. I saw several friends move back to the States after that, and saw several stay here in Paris, afraid to go back.
And now seven years later, it's as fresh in my mind as if it happened yeserday.
The horror.
I doubt that the world will ever get over it, I know Americans won't. I don't think we'll ever understand it either.
Priscilla Lalisse moved to Paris from New York City in 1999. In addition to being the Editor and Founder of Prissy Mag, she is the author of the novel STOCKDALE . For her complete bio, please click here.
