Remembering My Grandfather on Father's Day

Image0001grandaddyOn October 4, 2000 Alabama lost one of its most extraordinary citizens, and the world lost a tower of a man. Born in April 1919 in Loachapoka (Lee County) Alabama, Harry Heard moved to Heflin with his family when he was 11 years old. He went on to work at the Planter Mill for 60 years. I can still remember him walking back across the highway and eating a lunch that my grandmother had prepared, and then walking back to his job. He had said he wasn’t paid much, but that a man had to work.

9/11 was a wake-up call to America. We saw that there were people who want to destroy America and kill Americans. We saw that there was no conventional Army, but an open declaration of war was made against the United States of America.

9/11 was not the sole cause for the War on Terror, rather it was the catalyst that woke the sleeping giant and opened our eyes to the grim reality of an enemy hell-bent on spilling American blood for decades. September 11, 2001 changed our focus.

For Parisians, the event starts at 2pm at Place de la République (bien sur) and runs until 8pm, finishing with a free live concert at Place d'Italie. You should aggressively avoid these areas unless you really want to participate. If you’re just going for a stroll though, trust me, this is not where you want to be: massive police, massive "protesters", and massive rain, expected.
