London is a terrific city, there´s hardly any other way to put it! I loved it when I visited it last year, and again this year. It was cool knowing my way around a little bit and I was the tour guide for my family. Check out the things we loved most!
Our Hotel's Location
We stayed at Adare Hotel just down the street from Paddington Station.
Was there a Burger King? Check! KFC? Check! Garfunkels? Check! So it
was all good for me. We need a Burger King in Paris, sorry but we do. Before I continue digressing, those were the main eating places I wanted to hit
(not much into the fish n´chips, me).
The hotel wasn't the best (the rooms are in serious need of remodeling) but the breakfast made up for it a bit. The lovely
Brazilian staff were more than nice and great at making that
traditional English Breakfast...pork n´beans included.
Oxford Street
Nice shopping, every time. It was great introducing my Mom to Marks and
Spencer . Too bad this store left Paris! I love their food section.
The best one, I´m convinced. We took in all the major sites more than
once and got off at The Tower of London...spooky but delightful.
The Tower of London
As I said, spooky, but delightful. The Crown Jewels were impressive
enough, but Traitor's Gate stood out for me as my writer's imagination
ran wild while looking at it. The rest of it was quite impressive as
well. A very odd thing on display was a barrel with a video inside it.
When you looked down you saw the Duke of Clarence being drowned.
Legend and Shakespeare wrote that he was drowned in a barrel of wine-
executed for treason. It was weird being in a place where so many
people were imprisoned, tortured, murdured. The site where Lady Jane
Grey (the Nine Days Queen) and Anne Boleyn were beheaded (among others)
felt quite eerie. Still, I'd say the Tower is one tourist place not to
be missed.
The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace
If the truth be told, I really didn't want to go but my family was dead
set on it. It ended up being quite enjoyable as it was a beautiful
Summer day.
One of the palace guards rode her borrowed horse Finsbury
over to talk to us and made my son enjoy it all the more. As for the
changing of the guard itself, the Brits are unbeatable perhaps when it
comes to pomp and circumstance.
London is a dear city and I can't wait to go back. The history,
culture, and the politeness of the people is always a breath of fresh
air.
