Located in the Haute Savoie Region on the southern shore of the beautiful Lake Geneva is where you'll find these charming two cities. Both are known for being French spa towns, but they're also extremely gorgeous to visit. This is the perfect time to go because the summer season hasn't started yet, and at that time you'll find far too many people for your liking, perhaps... or mabye not.
In Evian and Thonon I found it funny to drink all the water I wanted to so cheaply. The last time I was home in the U.S. I'd caved in on the third day and gone to the grocery store and spent about six bucks on six small bottles. The scandal! Spas and water aren't the only thing they've got going though.
Our favorite addresses
Lac Leman (Lake Geneva)
Hands down this is the most exciting part of this area. Take a walk along side this beautiful lake from Thonon to Evian. Part of this enormous lake is under Swiss jurisdiction and part of the lake falls under French jurisdiction, and it's so lovely. There are plenty of places to stop and rest, sit down, and admire the lake. It's a good place for children as well. There were a lot of people dog walking, and quite simply strolling. There are clean public toilets and you'll also find a minature golf course.
Evian Casino
The Evian casino is one of the biggest theme Casino's in Europe. Aside from the typical games of roulette and slot machines, they also cater to Americans and Europeans with Black Jack and Stud Poker. The restaurants there are good too.
La Cave à Paul
An small wine store but impressive; located in the heart of Evian at 37 rue Nationale.
Le Temple du Fromage
This was a cute little place with a cute little staff, which simply means that they were so nice and interesting to talk to. I highly recommend the tour of the museum where you can see how people from as early as the 1900's lived and made cheese all from models. These models, which are lit up and have sound, are so well done and highly fascinating. Aferwards, you can do a cheese-tasting and buying. Yummy were the cheeses. A must try and buy? Beaufort d'ete.
Le Chateau de Ripalle
This 15th century Chateau located in Thonon is a great place to visit with a great amount of history to go with it. The tour of the castle and grounds is inexpensive and the guide speaks both French and English. You can also buy bottles of Chateau de Ripalle wine there (a good red wine) for about half the price you'd find it for in a typical wine store in Paris.
