This is a film with a lot of blank spaces, where we are not privy to background information. This is a disturbing film for sure, which touches on people’s phobias, for example women on meeting men, question their sexual preferences.
I took my son to see The Princess and the Frog yesterday in "VF" (the French version). This is a wee bit of a miracle for me because I absolutely abhor seeing American films in French. Usually, if it’s not in “VO” (original version or language) I wait for the DVD. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to see kids’ movies in English here… unless your kids are nite owls.
Imagine your worst fears and phobias, magnified, externalized, amplified, brought before your eyes, in crisp, stylized, digital clarity. Then you may have an insight into Lars Von Triar's Antichrist.
When your whole life is falling apart around you, when you have just made a failed suicide attempt, who do you turn to? Maybe your only source of salvation is a football player you used to idolise, perhaps the mercurial Eric Cantona?
For most men it would be their ultimate humiliation, a commentary by all their ex girlfriends, identifying their faults, including their sexual ineptness. Chris Waitt sets off on this bizarre odyssey, in which he is not only hideously humbled, but also some of his pain of break ups is also brought to the surface.
