MONUMENTA is organized each year with a leading international contemporary artist invited by the Ministry of Culture and Communication to create an exceptional new work for the 13,500 m² Nave of the Grand Palais.
Following the success of the first two MONUMENTA events, featuring Anselm Kiefer in 2007 and American sculptor Richard Serra in 2008, leading French artist Christian Boltanski has accepted the Monumenta challenge for 2010. Baptised "People", the artist's work stands as a metaphor about the inevitability of death and the danger that hangs over each of our lives.
Designed as a unique work that transforms the entire building with the creation of a particularly moving atmosphere, the work offers the visitor a giant animated show.
Many people have criticized the work for it's "waste"--mountains and mountains of clothes stacked upon each other. Some have said these items should go to the homeless or be sent to Haiti. In any case, the show has attracted many visitors and is already being hailed a success.
