Korean Educator’s Demonstration
Written by Mitzi Marrelli
00002mitzi_new.jpgThere’s a grave problem within the educational system is Korea, and this past weekend and there were certain militant teachers who came out en masse to demonstrate against inequities and demand change. The fervor with which they protested reminded me of une manifestation a la francaise. On an enormous plaza in the central business district of Seoul, thousands of educators from throughout the country united in dissension against issues ranging from tyrannical school principals to the increasingly high cost of education. It was truly an impressive and dedicated congregation who convened on Saturday as the afternoon sun blazed down and thoroughly baked the concrete surfaces surrounding us.

The Circle of Huts, Part 2
Written by Mitzi Marrelli

korean_girlThe moral of the story is, go with that intuition girl. If it feels strange, it probably is. Exactly like the Love Motels with their stark lobbies and their attendants hiding in their opaque glass cages. It was only a matter of days before le Monsieur Aire de Debonaire invited my friend on a tour of his establishment as he matter of factly explained how he could provide the company of any of a number of girls who work for him. As they strolled by all the huts, furtively glancing in the windows, Le Monsieur pointed out his stable, all the while explaining that if any of those girls were appealing, he need simply to indicate his preference, and his choice would be called upon for the purpose of animating a tête a tête or even joining in with a group if so desired! He proudly went on to explain that not only was he the lord of this establishment, but also that he had several similar venues in surrounding towns.

The Circle of Huts, Part 1
Written by Mitzi Marrelli

0001koreanhouse.jpgNot long ago I visited my Brooklynite friend for the weekend in a neighboring Korean city of some size. To reach the entrance of the building where he lives, we had to pass through, ostensibly, a kind of garden/courtyard throughout which were dispersed western style tables, chairs, and round stools made from the stumps of trees that had some of the roughness sanded off, and a coat of lacquer applied. The evening was clear and the temperature was mild, but nobody was enjoying the lovely outdoors in this sort of spacious exterior room, which in France or the States would have been crowded on such a pleasant night as this one.

Lust in South Korea
Written by Mitzi Marrelli
01issue_25_taking_a_look_at.jpgIt's been three full months now that I've been living in South Korea and I am just about to crack the tip of the iceberg of the inner workings of the love life of this culture. Living in this beautiful little isolated oasis where nobody speaks English well enough for me to have a conversation with, and my not speaking the Korean language has really held me back; but recently I made friends with a tall, black hot number from Brooklyn who is also teaching English in a nearby town, and he has filled me in on the hypocrisy, and yes, the sexual revolution that is in full swing in Korea. Of course he is giving me the perspective from the eyes of a man, but his absolute frankness has not left me doubting his explanations!
