A number of years have flown by since some friends told me about a musician called Fela Kuti, a Nigerian musician the pioneer of Afrobeat music, a human rights activist, and political maverick. His music a fusion of jazz, funk and Traditional African Chant, with African rhythms and a pronounced horn section. I bought some of his albums and probably wore them out from listening to them, they were so hypnotic.

Some people in Britain hold to the cliché that Germans don’t have a sense of humour. Senor Coconut and his Orchestra, certainly dispel this myth. Get this, a German group/orchestra, with a sizable brass section, percussion, including marimbas, timbales and bongos, go through a repertoire of unlikely tunes, in a Latin spirit. It’s an unlikely fusion. The gentlemen concerned spend a long time to sound check their equipment. They have arrived in a large black bus. The weather has been kind, this is an outdoor event, festival sous la plage but it is not exactly “beach weather.” Many people are lounging on the perfectly manicured green grass, while the balloon that is a feature of the parc Citroen went up and down laden with tourists.

The name Herbie Hancock, was most familiar to me, however I had only blurred memories of what his music sounded like. When a jazz legend does a free concert, in fine weather, one feels
obliged to attend. The setting is an unusual one, in the hub of
business land, La Defense. There are those spread-eagled on the
carefully manicured grass, some dozing off, probably the victims of an
excessive Saturday night over indulgence while others are standing and
attentive. The sound seems to be lost in the vastness of this huge
concrete expanse.

La French , a Parisian meetup group headed by two Frenchies, Laurent and Slyvain, organizes international parties on a weekly basis. Next week they are hosting a halloween party, on the exact date, Wednesday, October 31, at 7pm. I've been interested in covering one of their parties for awhile now, and I think this just might be the one not to miss. The event fee is 15.00€ per person and will be held until 1am, at the Six Seven Club - 65/67 rue Pierre Charron Paris 8e, Metro Franklin Roosevelt (lines 9/1).
