Update: France Loses to England!!!

rugbyFrance lost the semi-final match to England Saturday October 13. Although many of the French were sad, I witnessed no terrible fights or scraching out of the eyes in the British pub that I happened to be in. Look on the bright side: Now we get to see England's Jonny Wilkinson in all his glory a little bit more...

03issue_25_art_gallery.jpgBusinesses change hands in my local area at a rapid rate, especially bars and restaurants as entrepreneurial types play their hand at making money , many quickly fall by the wayside and are replaced. Imagine the surprise I had to discover the prosaic but practical fruit and vegetable shop which I had used most intermittently, which had after a short existence folded, was being replaced by a funky new art gallery, just round the corner from where I live.

Bertrand Cantat: Soon to be Released?

01issue_25_cantat.jpgBertrant Cantat, the lead singer from the well-known rock band Noir Désir, whom some like to compare to Jim Morrison, might soon be seeing the light of day. Although he has already spent four years in prison at Muret for the murder of his lover Marie Trintignant, his lawyers have requested that he be released early due to good behavior. The question of an early release is causing a big debate.

French Admiration

MartinI was recently talking to a group of French people, both men and women. There were over fifteen in the group. The conversation turned to people we admire. It was a simple question. The person could be living or dead. At least five people instantly sprang to my mind. Let's see: Martin Luther King Jr. and all the people who fought for our Civil Rights, Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, Walt Whitman, T.S. Eliot...my grandmother. Like I said, it was a simple enough question for me. Easy. Not tough at all. But when it came to the French people in the group, I was quite shocked by their responses.
