Ten Questions for une Française
WHO: Amina, age 23, Second year student in Foreign Languages Masters Program.
PM: Where are you from originally?
Amina: I'm French with origins from Mali.
PM: Have you ever been to an English-speaking country?
Amina: Yes.
PM: So what did you think about it?
Amina: It was nice. I had a vacation in New York that I have very fond memories from. Also, I've
been studying at Cambridge UK for the past year and everthing is going rather well.
PM: Do you have any Anglophone friends here in Paris?
Amina: Yes.
PM: If you run into Anglophones here and they don’t speak French, are you disappointed?
Amina: Not, not at all. I'm neither shocked nor disappointed.
PM: Do you feel that Anglophones living here in
France should try to live in the “French way”, i.e. total immersion
into the culture, or not?
Amina: No. As long as the different cultures respect each other, we can all live in harmony.
PM: Paris is probably the most visited city in the
world. How do you feel about all the tourists here ? Does it have a
direct impact on your life?
Amina: No, it doesn't bother me at all. Paris is such a big city and tourism is extremely important for us, as in other large cities.
PM: What would you change about Paris in particular?
Amina: Traffic problems! Trying to get around in a car in Paris is hard!
PM: If there are problems with France, what are they in your opinion?
Amina: Unemployment, education, immigration, discrimination.
PM: Were you for Ségo or Sarko?
Amina: I wasn't convinced by either of the candidates, really. But if I had to choose one, I'd say Ségo.
