Beyond Paris
The Circle of Huts, Part 1
Written by Mitzi Marrelli

0001koreanhouse.jpgNot long ago I visited my Brooklynite friend for the weekend in a neighboring Korean city of some size. To reach the entrance of the building where he lives, we had to pass through, ostensibly, a kind of garden/courtyard throughout which were dispersed western style tables, chairs, and round stools made from the stumps of trees that had some of the roughness sanded off, and a coat of lacquer applied. The evening was clear and the temperature was mild, but nobody was enjoying the lovely outdoors in this sort of spacious exterior room, which in France or the States would have been crowded on such a pleasant night as this one.

Lust in South Korea
Written by Mitzi Marrelli
01issue_25_taking_a_look_at.jpgIt's been three full months now that I've been living in South Korea and I am just about to crack the tip of the iceberg of the inner workings of the love life of this culture. Living in this beautiful little isolated oasis where nobody speaks English well enough for me to have a conversation with, and my not speaking the Korean language has really held me back; but recently I made friends with a tall, black hot number from Brooklyn who is also teaching English in a nearby town, and he has filled me in on the hypocrisy, and yes, the sexual revolution that is in full swing in Korea. Of course he is giving me the perspective from the eyes of a man, but his absolute frankness has not left me doubting his explanations!

The Story of Poppy
Written by Mitzi Marrelli
01issue_24_poppy.jpg

Last August I went away from the East Coast of Korea and into the interior of the country to a medium sized town called Sang ju. The Koreans conduct what they call “English Camps” that generally last a week at a time. I had an experience with one of the children that I found absolutely delightful. I’d like to share it with you and hope it can bring a smile to your face!

The kids here in Sang-ju are as eager to learn as mine in Bugu-ri...actually, they are even more of a pleasure to work with because being elementary school age; they're much less inhibited about speaking than my Middle School children.
